21 Mar From Swamp Land to Luxury Mall
From Swamp Land to the Ritzy Bal Harbour Mall
By Ross Milroy | March 21, 2017
Founded by industrialist Robert C. Graham, Walter O. Briggs and Carl G. Fisher, Bal Harbour transformed from swampy land that stretched to the Atlantic to one of the most affluent cities in the country. After filling the swamp, sea walls constructed and a yacht basin put into place, Bal Harbour was officially incorporated as a city in 1946. Developments such as Church by the Sea, the Beach Club and the Sheraton Hotel put this opulent city on the map but what added put it on the radar of the elite were the Shops of Bal Harbour.
The introduction of Bal Harbour Shops in 1965 skyrocketed the city as an exclusive and upscale place to reside. Bal Harbour Shops, developed by Stanley Whitman, was designed to celebrate the beauty of South Florida and introduced an open-air shopping center with luxury stores handpicked by Whitman himself. Today, Bal Harbour Shops is still one of the leading “al fresco” malls in the world with high-fashion stores such as Miu Miu, Jimmy Choo, Valentino and Versace.
